Schätzel: Germany’s Rising Star
Kai Schätzel may not be a familiar name to industry insiders, but we predict it soon will be.
The ten-hectare family-run estate based in Neirstein in the Rheinhessen has been producing wines since 1850, but it is the latest generation that has put the domain on the figurative map. We first met Kai in spring 2015 and, under the endorsement of legendary German producer Egon Müller, began importing his clean, modern-style Rieslings.
In recent months, Schätzel’s terroir-driven wines have been accumulating accolades on their home terrain and here in the UK: In December 2015, the domain was inducted into Germany’s prestigious Verband Deutscher Qualitäts- und Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) and their single vineyard wines were given Großes Gewächs (GG) status. Most recently, Schätzel’s ReinSchiefer 2013 won the distinguished master’s award in The Drinks Business 2016 Global Riesling Masters. The future is bright. Contact us for more information.
