Le Macioche – Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (DOCG)
Approaching Montalcino from the southeast, visitors to the medieval hill town first ascend the hill of Le Macioche, just beyond which this estate of the same name is located.
The 3-hectacre vineyard, located at 450m above sea level -one of the highest for Brunello- was restored in the late eighties and is today managed and owned by Northern Italian business man Riccardo Caliari.
The estate produces distinctive wines, with elegant high-toned aromatics and complex floral-to-woodsy scents, with hints of underlying power and full body. Their total annual production is only about 1500 cases.
“Ripe, sweet and layered in its dark fruit, spices, menthol and tobacco. Fruit, acidity and structure are all beautifully balanced, while the finish boasts tons of polish. This mid-weight, firm Brunello can be enjoyed today, but it will be even better in a few years’ time.”
