Egon Müller Kanta – Riesling 2009
Egon Müller is arguably Germany’s most highly renowned winemaker, being the fifth generation of his family to produce wines on the famed Scharzhofberg (the only “Great Growth” of the Saar Valley). Egon has teamed up with vineyard and winery owners Shaw and Smith and Adelaide winemaker Steve Pannell to produce this exemplary wine. Kanta is a Sanskrit word meaning the beloved.
This really is something special. The wine is a fusion of the slatey/minerally style of the Saar with the ebullience of Australian Riesling. A completely dry wine has both delicacy and richness. 2009 Kanta gives elegant, restrained citrus aromas with notes of lemon zest and grapefruit peel plus nuances of acacia honey, chalk and wet slate. The palate is concentrated and tight-knit, very young and steely, giving plenty of green apple and citrus flavours, refreshing acid and a long mineral finish.
